Booze notebook: Bothell-made bourbon bringing home awards

The latest on Snohomish County’s breweries, wineries and distilleries.

The Dark Door, the recently released bourbon from Bothell’s Wildwood Spirits, is making waves at international competitions.

In March, The Dark Door won a gold medal at the fifth annual Berlin International Spirits Competition. A month later, it took home double gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The Berlin competition features more than 300 spirits submitted from nearly 20 countries. Gold medal winners are featured at ProWein, the largest wine and spirits event in the world.

The San Francisco competition has been around since 2000, and double golds are awarded to entries that receive a gold medal rating by all members of the judging panel.

Bottles from the first barrel of The Dark Door sold out the day they were released, but the next barrel will release in late May. In total, Wildwood Spirits Co. will produce 1,280 bottles this year and will double that number in 2019.

Washington Distillery Trail launches: The Washington Distiller’s Guild recently announced the launch of a new website promoting The Washington Distillery Trail, an interactive guide of distilleries across the state.

The website has an interactive map, which allows users to sort distilleries by region and drill down for more information, including products offered, contact information and tasting room hours. Users can also filter their results by type of spirit or region and create a “favorites” folder and add tasting notes.

According to the guild, future plans for the website include implementing some kind of passport program and adding interactive features.

Check out the website at www.washingtondistillerytrail.com.

Drinks fly free on Alaska: Wanna head to craft beer meccas like San Diego or Portland and bring some goodies home with you? Well, Alaska Airlines recently expanded its “Wine (or Beer) Flies Free” service to 29 West Coast airports, including eight in Washington, so you don’t have to mess around trying to ship all of it.

The program is straightforward. Collect up to 12 bottles of beer or wine, pack it up in a protective shipping container and let Alaska Airlines customer services agents know it’s fragile, so they can mark it. Then board the plane and meet it on the other side.

The offer is available on Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air and SkyWest flights, and is only offered to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members.
