What: A level walk through old-growth forest past a number of rapids and waterfalls.
Where: From Darrington, take Highway 530 west 8.2 miles to French Creek Road, Forest Service Road 2010, at Milepost 41. Turn left on 2010 and drive four miles to the trailhead.
Length: Eight miles round trip.
Difficulty: Easy. The trail is level and in fair condition, except for a few deteriorating bridges and boardwalks.
Beginning elevation: 1,000 feet.
Permit: Northwest Forest Pass.
Notes: There’s a hint of spring in the air, but the mountains haven’t gotten the scent yet. So for a few more weeks, we’ll have to content ourselves with the river valleys and coastal hikes. The Boulder River Trail is a reliable winter destination, with towering old-growth trees and some lovely waterfalls to look at and a muddy, but passable, tread. The trail enters the Boulder River Wilderness after a mile and dead-ends into the river at about 4 miles in. Expect a few downed trees and a little snow on the trail.
