Cartooning exhibit draws viewers into world of animation

“Works in Progress” is the title of a cartooning and animation exhibit opening Saturday at the Point Elliott Art Center Gallery in Mukilteo.

The exhibit gives a behind-the-scenes look at how artists create animated art for video, film and television. Featured are exhibits from animated TV pilots, 3-D cartoon characters, video games and children’s books.

A project by Monte Michaelis titled “What are You Making?” is a short film based on his 2-year-old daughter, Emma, and her bohemian approach to the medium of Play-Doh.

A history wall tells the story of cartooning from cave drawings to classic Disney cartoons with modern innovations.

The Gene Nastri School is offering workshops and a cartooning class in conjunction with the exhibit, including caricature drawings, writing and illustrating books and introduction to cartooning.

There’s a reception 4-8 p.m. Saturday with entertainment. The gallery is at 724 First St., Mukilteo. The show runs through March 6. Call: 425-347-8480.

For the birds: “Bird Song” is the title of a solo exhibit of paintings by Everett artist Shannon Danks on view this month at Art Boutique in the Everett Public Market.

Her work is seen locally in a variety of venues: She made a mosaic for Garfield Park last summer and was the designer of the Everett Pop &Arts street festival.

She is also a singer in a group called “Amazon Ant.”

“Singing sure does inspire the creative soul, and if I get that platinum album, I will be able to afford a lot of brushes and paint,” Danks said.

The show’s title, taken from a song by the “Grateful Dead,” reflects her interest in making paintings of animals and birds. There are acrylic and watercolor paintings in the show, along with pastels and ink drawings, plus portraits and landscapes.

There’s a reception 4-8 tonight in the gallery, at 2804 Grand Ave., Everett; 425-501-2448.

Art with your coffee: An exhibit of watercolors by Tammy Smith opens today at Espresso Americano at the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave. There’s an opening reception 4-6 p.m. Feb. 12.

The artist has chosen watercolor to paint landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and paints in an impressionistic style. She also incorporates mixed media, calligraphy and collage in more abstract works. Her show runs through April 2.

An exhibit of acrylic paintings by Sue Robertson runs Feb. 12 to April 9 at Espresso Americano inside the Everett Station in Everett.

Dual show: “Madonnas and Mosaics” is the title of the new exhibit at the Arts of Snohomish Art Gallery in Snohomish.

The exhibit features the mosaic glass art of Carl and Sandra Bryant and the realistic paintings of Jeanne Whitney. Meet the artists in a reception 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the gallery, located in the city’s historic Old Carnegie Library, 105 Cedar Ave.; 360-568-8648, www.artsofsnohomish. org.

Gallery walk: The Anacortes monthly Gallery Walk is 6-9 tonight in the downtown commercial area. Galleries and shops will show the work of local artists.

The Gallery at the Depot, 611 R Ave., is hosting a show with the theme “Red.” The artists include Michael Wirth, neon artist; Georgia Johnson, poet; Kathleen Faulkner, jeweler; April Richardson, monotypes; Sue Roberts, sculptor; Cathy Schoenberg, painter; Michael Clough, painter; Carol Merrick, mixed media.

Other locations will be showing paintings, glass, raku pottery, jewelry and photography.
