Classic Italian compositions, Irish jigs, Mozart on tap this weekend

Hear the music in Lynnwood, Monroe and Mukilteo.

Snohomish County will have both the old, the new and the green this weekend with music.

Take your pick between a Mozart classic, famous compositions dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries in Italy and fun Irish jigs both traditional and contemporary.

‘Coronation Mass’

The Sno-King Community Chorale is taking on one of Mozart’s most famous religious works.

The chorale, joined by the Sno-King Orchestra, is performing “Coronation Mass” from 3 to 7 p.m. March 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. The short Mass was composed in 1779 and combines the voices of four soloists.

The solo singers are soprano Jennifer Bromagen, who peforms regularly with the Seattle Opera; baritone Jacob William Herbert, who sings with the Portland Symphonic and Bach Cantata choirs; mezzo soprano Sarah Mattox, who has sung principal roles in more than a dozen operas; and tenor Stephen Rumph, who teaches music history at the University of Washington.

Tickets from $15. More at sno-kingchorale.org.

Songs of the Shamrock

For the first time ever, the Monroe Concert Band is playing only traditional Irish music on St. Patrick’s Day.

The band will play old ballads and jigs like “Danny Boy” and “Irish Washerwoman” at its “Songs of the Shamrock” concert 7 p.m. March 17 at Wagner Performing Arts Center, 639 W. Main St., Monroe.

The free concert also will feature new favorites like “The Emerald Isle” and “Kirkpatrick’s Muse.”

There will be a raffle for door prizes that include dinner for four, movie passes and a grocery gift card. More at monroeconcertband.org.

La Dolce Vita

The Mukilteo Community Orchestra is giving its audience a history lesson with a free concert Sunday.

“La Dolce Vita: A Celebration of Italian Classics” begins at 2 p.m. March 18 at the Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo. The concert highlights prominent Italian composers from the 18th and 19th centuries. A pre-concert lecture by conductor and artistic director Trevor Lutzenhiser is at 1:20 p.m.

The program includes Gioacchino Rossini’s “Oveture to The Barber of Seville,” Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana: Intermezzo,” Giacomo Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut: Intermezzo Act III,” and “La Gioconda: Dance of the Hours” by Amilcare Ponchielli.

The second half of the concert features Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome,” in four parts.
