Drink this: New Summit series named after the tallest peaks

Sound to Summit in Snohomish is brewing seven beers in honor of the Seven Summits. Denali is first.

In need of inspiration for his latest IPA series, Sound to Summit’s head brewer looked up.

Way up.

Over the next three months, Adam Frantz is brewing six double IPAs and a triple IPA as part of Sound to Summit’s 7 Summit IPA Series. The seven beers will be named in honor of the tallest peaks on each of the seven continents. The first in the series, Denali, is pouring now.

Frantz said that customers can pick up a punch card and get it punched when they purchase a pint of one of the 7 Summit IPAs at the Snohomish brewery. Get all seven beer punches and receive a T-shirt at the brewery’s fourth anniversary party in February, where the final beer in the series, a triple IPA called Everest, will be released.

The seven beers will run the gamut of IPAs, starting with Denali, a West Coast IPA. Frantz also plans to brew Northwest, hazy, milkshake, brut and black styles, as well as the aforementioned triple IPA. The plan is to release two per month over the next three months. Find details on Sound to Summit’s Facebook page.

To make Denali, Frantz combined Mosaic, Simcoe and Columbus hops and a light malt bill to create a fruit-forward IPA with notes of tropical fruit, hard candy and subtle notes of piney bitterness on the finish.

“I really like how the Columbus complements Mosaic and its tropical fruit notes,” Frantz said.

Frantz is brewing a single batch of each beer, about seven barrels worth, so how long they last depends on the hype each receives. Expect the hazy and milkshake IPAs to go quickly.

On a separate note, Sound to Summit will be brewing a beer next week in support of the California wildfire relief effort. Prompted by Sierra Nevada, which is based in Chico, California, just miles from the town of Paradise and where the Camp Fire originated, Sound to Summit will brew a batch of Resilience IPA. One hundred percent of the sales of Resilience IPA will go to the Camp Fire victims.

Sierra Nevada put a call out to brewers to brew Resilience IPA in support of the wildfire relief fund. It’s providing the recipe and helping brewers procure the ingredients, so long as the breweries donate the sales of the beer to the fund. Expect the beer to hit Sound to Summit’s taps in mid-December.
