Conor Oberst plans to start streaming a documentary on his Web site this April 15 about the forming of his new backing group, the Mystic Valley Band, which he apparently patched together while recording his solo album in Mexico.
As anyone who has heard that album knows, the Mystic Valley Band is a lot more Nashville than Mexico.
The group’s new single as Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band is “Nikorette.” The track sticks to Oberst’s recent formula: Catchy arrangements with personal lyrics that include the occasional double negative for folksy charm.
“Now everyone I see I think I’ve known before, from the opera house to the grocery story,” he sings. “My love for them I cannot ignore, like a human voice in a quiet morgue. But I don’t want to wear no dead man’s suit.”
You can download the track for free by right clicking here or visiting his site.
Oberst is probably best known as the frontman for Bright Eyes, an indie rock group. He’s frequently compared to Bob Dylan, on account of the spiritual tone to his lyrics, his Americana-steeped sound and his seemingly bottomless well of talent.
