Box-leaf honeysuckle is an attractive ground cover with non-stop interest, including evergreen, boxwood-like foliage all year long; small, fragrant, funnel-shaped, creamy-white flowers in May; and stunning, violet-blue, translucent berries in winter. Also known as lonicera pileata, it works well as a ground cover, thanks to branches that slowly root when they touch the ground. It is salt tolerant and therefore does well in seashore plantings. It is also a good companion for deciduous trees such as native vine maple. It grows in any well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade and, once established, is drought tolerant. It rarely needs any pruning and is easy to propagate from cuttings taken in fall or early spring. It reaches about 2 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
