So in today’s paper I wrote an article previewing the Hold Steady’s show Sunday at the University of Washington.
For the article, I talked with the band’s co-founder, lead guitarist Tad Kubler. Here’s some trivia, then, from Kubler to me to you:
Favorite team: “I gotta say right now my favorite sports team is the Packers.”
Favorite drink: “I usually drink whiskey cokes. … If I’m going straight, I gotta go with Booker’s.”
Favorite album at age 13: “It was probably London Calling. … Right around 12, 13, you move into middle school and start getting exposed to the middle school kids and all those kids who had gotten into punk. … The Clash just seemed like, they seemed a little more cerebral or intellectual than a lot of the other stuff.”
If he could play guitar with any group other than the Hold Steady: “Oh. Drive-By Truckers. … I love their band and they write great rock songs.”
The band also has recorded some pretty solid covers of Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin and the Violent Femmes.
The Led Zeppelin one peters out, the Seger one’s sound quality could be better, and the Violent Femmes one’s just good.
