MUKILTEO — Forgive the sports analogy, but Kamiak High School’s production of “Footloose” has won the state championship.
In a Tony awards-like ceremony Monday night at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Kamiak took home the top honor.
“Footloose” was named the Outstanding Overall Musical Production at the 15th annual 5th Avenue Theatre Awards Honoring High School Musical Theater.
Kamiak also won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Jeff LaSorella played the character Willard in “Footloose.”
Though many other Snohomish County schools were nominated for the 5th’s musical theater awards, only Kamiak won final recognition. “Footloose” had garnered 12 nominations in 21 categories, more than any other production in the state.
More than 10,000 high school students in 122 productions statewide were involved in this year’s contest. Each year, schools that can afford to perform musicals submit their shows for consideration. Then a panel of theater professionals tours the state watching the shows.
Of the more than 100 schools that participated, 16 received awards on Monday.
“In a testament to the high quality work being done in schools across Washington state, no school swept the ceremony,” said the 5th’s spokeswoman Bridget Morgan.
Along with Kamiak, other schools that won two awards for their productions included Overlake, Tahoma and Hanford.
Tahoma’s production of “Ghost the Musical” won the top actor and actress awards, Chelan was awarded best direction, Hanford got best music direction, Redmond took home the best choreography award, Walla Walla had the best orchestra, Shorecrest had the best chorus, Sequim took the best scenic design award and there was a tie between Auburn and Kentlake for outstanding stage crew.
