Lunch combos offer delicious variety at Mukilteo Thai

You know the lunch you ordered will be good when the soup served with it is so tasty that you want another cup.

I’ve enjoyed lunch from the to-go menu many times from Mukilteo Thai Authentic Cuisine next to the 7-Eleven off of the Mukilteo Speedway — but because I pick up most of my meals, I have never tried the vegetable soup.

All four of us — myself and three of my co-workers Andrea Brown, Gale Fiege and Sue Misao — raved about the soup. They had never been to Mukilteo Thai before.

Andrea said it best: “It was tasty and tomatoey with soft, tiny cubes of vegetables. I wanted another cup. No, I wanted a big bowl. And crackers.”

Because there were four of us, we ordered the four lunch combos: cashew nut chicken, curry chicken, rama chicken and garlic chicken, $9.56 each.

I pick up the phad sweet basil when I want to treat myself, which is stir-fried bell peppers, green beans, mushrooms, onions, sweet basil, sauce and your choice of meat over rice.

I don’t know when it was removed from the lunch menu, but I was disappointed to see that the dish was no longer listed, among others. I noticed that the combo prices were a couple dollars higher, too, although still under $10.

I look forward to eating phad sweet basil so much that I didn’t really notice that at some point I was paying more for it. Oh, well. It’s worth it to me.

Back to our lunch: The garlic chicken was served with two spring rolls, while the other combos were paired with phad Thai. All dishes had the choice of jasmine or brown rice.

Andrea avoids curry when she eats Thai, but she tried the yellow curry “for the team,” and was surprised that Mukilteo Thai’s coconut cream sauce hit the spot.

“It was simple, tangy and delish. My favorite dish.”

Gale didn’t have one dish she liked most because she liked three of them — the rama, curry and garlic plates — and especially the phad Thai.

“The restaurant offers standard Thai fare, but, oh, is it good. The brown rice was filling and soaked up the delicious sauces.”

Like Gale, I thought all of it was delicious and I especially liked how the chicken was cut-with-a-fork tender, but it was the garlic plate that stood out to me. It had just the right amount of garlic; not too much, not too little.

Sue only tried two of the lunch combos — the curry and the rama — because they were set the closest to her on the table. She ate them with the white rice because mixing brown rice and curry didn’t seem right to her.

She was the least impressed with the restaurant out of the four of us. She didn’t have a favorite, but she liked the peanut sauce that topped the chicken rama better than the peanut-y flavors of the phad Thai.

“The phad Thai didn’t taste special enough. I can’t describe it any other way.”

In addition to the soup, we also raved about the jasmine tea we ordered, which was served in a glass carafe, not a teapot. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest impression. The tea was flavorful, yet light, and warmed us up on a chilly afternoon.

Andrea, Gale and I each drank four cups. It was that good.
