Make your own scarecrow for Edmonds festival and contest

1. Help a veteran.

You can do more to thank a veteran for their service this Veterans Day.

Two nonprofits — Operation Gratitude and Operation Paperback — have collection drives in Mill Creek through Nov. 2. Both will provide for members of the military and their families.

Operation Gratitude is collecting all-purpose wipes, deodorant, powder, sewing kits, sunscreen, batteries (AA and AAA), drink-mix packets, gum, hand warmers, jerky, lip balm, pencils (mechanical), playing cards, puzzle books, socks, small toys, knit or crocheted scarves, hats and ties.

Operation Paperback is asking for new or gently used books.

2. Make a scarecrow.

Scarecrows don’t have to be scary anymore.

The Edmonds Historical Society is hosting its annual Scarecrow Festival this month.

Make your own scarecrow and enter the contest. Display it in a prominient location in Edmonds and nearby unincorporated Snohomish County. Vote for your favorite online. Deadline to register is Oct. 15.

More at www.scf.historicedmonds.org.

3. Movement matters.

October is National Physical Therapy Month, a time to care of your body, mind and soul.

According to RET Physical Therapy Group, which has 25 clinics in the Puget Sound area, all three can be accomplished with — yup, you guessed it — exercise.

Most of us know that exercise improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of chronic disease, and strengthen bones and joints. But did you know that it strengthens memory, slows the rate of mild cognitive impairments, and reduces anxiety and stress?

Exercise also makes us happier. Research shows it helps removes barriers that may stop you from experiencing life to the fullest.
