Morgen gained unprecedented access to Cobain’s personal archives, and relies on that material to offer an unflinchingly intimate portrait of an iconic musician who lived on the fine edge between madness and genius. Included: Interviews with Cobain’s mother and sister, his widow, Courtney Love, and others. 9 p.m, HBO
“Gotham” closes out a first season that was both riveting and revolting as the city is plagued by a vicious gang war. Too bad Batman can’t show up to save the day. 8 p.m., Fox
“David Letterman: A Life on Television”: Host Ray Romano explores the late-night talker’s career from his days as an Indiana weatherman forecasting hail the size of canned hams. 9:30 p.m., CBS
