Movie reviews

“The Assassination of Richard Nixon” HH Sean Penn gives an exacting portrait of a hapless loser whose failures in life lead him to plot the demise of the president. Good acting, but hard to know why this fellow is at the center of a film. (R, for language, subject.)

“The Aviator” HHH Near-three-hour telling of the life of Howard Hughes, aviation pioneer, Hollywood mogul, and obsessive, with Leonardo DiCaprio growing into the role as he goes. Director Martin Scorsese is drunk on the lavish sets and costumes, and the scenes are well-made, but the movie is more of a good subject than a good story. With Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn. (PG-13, for violence, language, nudity.)

“Beyond the Sea” HH Screen bio of Bobby Darin, the short-lived pop star who married teen queen Sandra Dee. Kevin Spacey directs and plays Darin-with enormous energy-and his one-man band approach focuses on the music, which is fine, rather than drama, which is not. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Finding Neverland” HHH Fictionalized story of J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp), and how he might have come to write “Peter Pan” after befriending a family of boys and their lonely mother (Kate Winslet). A bit too literal in its life-into-art ideas, but the movie will definitely bring on the sniffles. (PG, for subject.)

“Hotel Rwanda” HHHH It makes its points somewhat bluntly, but what a story this movie has to tell: it’s based on the real-life experiences of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in Rwanda, who in the 1994 massacres protected refugees in his building. Don Cheadle gives a heroic performance. (PG-13, for violence, language, subject.)

“The Incredibles” HHHH Terrific Pixar feature about a family of superheroes, who come out of forced retirement when needed. The action-movie element keeps it shy of the “Finding Nemo” benchmark, but it’s got wonderful characters and impeccable comic timing. (PG, for violence.)

“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” HHH Based on the first three of the best-selling childrens books, this is the dreadful saga of the Baudelaire orphans, who are constantly at the mercy of wicked Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). The movie doesn’t quite follow through, but it has genuinely weird moments, and Carrey is terrific. (PG, for violence, subject matter.)

“Million Dollar Baby” HHHH A wise, patient, and extremely moving film about a boxing trainer (Clint Eastwood) who reluctantly tutors a young woman (Hilary Swank). Eastwood also directed, transforming the old-fashioned material into a wonderfully gentle tale. With Morgan Freeman. (PG-13, for violence, language.)

“The Motorcycle Diaries” HHHH Before he became a world revolutionary, Che Guevara set out on an eight-month trip along the length of South America, with a buddy and a dubious motorcycle. This movie takes a somewhat romantic view of the journey, but it’s a great road movie and an absorbing character study. Directed by Walter Salles. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)

“National Treasure” HH A completely stupid Jerry Bruckheimer production about a “DaVinci Code” -like search for hidden treasure, the chief clue residing on the back of the Declaration of Independence. The movie’s surprisingly entertaining if you go with it. Nicolas Cage stars. (PG, for violence.)

“The Phantom of the Opera” HH Lavish adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version, and more of a document of the show than a movie in its own right. The production is hampered by a Phantom (Gerard Butler) who doesn’t sing well, although the film’s Christine (Emmy Rossum) is a plus. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Racing Stripes” H A pet zebra wants to be a thoroughbred racehorse. We know this because the animals talk, in a movie that has a plea for tolerance and lots of poop jokes. It’s pretty lame, despite the celebrity voices for the animals. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Sideways” HHHH Two old friends road-trip for a week in the Santa Barbara wine country, sampling vintages and meeting women. This melancholy comedy is full of keen observations, good wine talk, and some slapstick, and it’s beautifully acted by a cast led by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. (R, for language, nudity.)

“A Very Long Engagement” HHH A World War I tale from “Amelie” director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, about a woman (Audrey Tatou) determined to find her lost lover. Jeunet’s toybox style doesn’t exactly fit the gravity of the setting, but it makes the movie bouncy to watch. (In French, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
