“Apocalypto” HHH A crazed, non-stop epic set in the pre-Columbian era Mayan culture. Director Mel Gibson keeps the extreme violence at full throttle, and he knows how to sketch characters-even if his obsessions overwhelm the movie at times. (In Maya, with English subtitles.) “Blood Diamond” HH One of Hollywood’s admirable attempts to make a statement about an important topic (the civil war in Sierra Leone and the dirty secrets of the diamond business), this film rarely comes to compelling life-and the one-dimensional characters don’t help. Leonardo DiCaprio is a jewel-smuggler on the trail of a huge stone hidden in the African chaos. (R, for violence, language.)
“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” HHHH British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen embodies a misogynistic, anti-Semitic visitor from Kazakhstan named Borat, who tours the U.S. and A. In a series of shaggy but hilarious improvised scenes, Borat descends upon unsuspecting dupes and horrifies them. The result is one of the funniest movies of this or any other millennium. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)
“Casino Royale” HHH A course correction for the James Bond series, with a new 007 (the terrific Daniel Craig) and a move away from the special-effects absurdities of the Pierce Brosnan era. Not everything works, but at least this one feels like a spy movie, not a 1990s action flick. (PG-13, for violence, language.)
“Charlotte’s Web” HH A live-action version of the beloved E.B. White book, about the friendship between a pig and a spider. Something about the live-action (complete with talking animals) deadens the magic of the story, and the saucy one-liners don’t help. With Dakota Fanning. (G)
“Curse of the Golden Flower” HHH Director Zhang Yimou mounts a delirious story of palace intrigue in the 10th century, drenched in crazy colors and costumes. Amidst the blistering design, there’s also good stuff from Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat, as royals conspiring against each other, plus a final battle the out-does “Lord of the Rings.” (In Mandarin, with English subtitles.) “The Departed” HHHH A crackling crime opus from Martin Scorsese, remaking the Hong Kong thriller “Infernal Affairs.” An Irish gangster (Jack Nicholson) in Boston is tracked by an undercover cop (Leonardo DiCaprio) while his own crooked operative (Matt Damon) has assumed a position of authority in the police force. Suspense and shocking violence make for two and a half hours of excitement. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“Eragon” HH A sketchy movie (definitely geared for a young audience) that lives in the shadow of “The Lord of the Rings,” all about a Dragon Rider who goes to battle against the evil ones. The special-effects dragon is the real star, although Jeremy Irons holds his own as mentor to the young hero. (PG, for violence.)
“For Your Consideration” HHH The new improvisational comedy from Christopher Guest and his troupe of gifted comedians; this time they take on Hollywood, and what happens when an actress (Catherine O’Hara) hears a rumor that she might snag an Oscar nomination. The comedy is very mild, more grins than guffaws, and one wants more from the best comics (Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Ricky Gervais); but you’ll be laughing. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“The Good German” HH A misfired but fascinating experiment from director Steven Soderbergh: a film that looks like a 1945 studio picture, complete with black-and-white, but with modern attitude. Cate Blanchett catches some period mood, although George Clooney falls short of Humphrey Bogart. (R, for language, violence.)
“The Good Shepherd” HHH A near-three-hour look at the CIA’s early decades, seen through the eyes of an ice-cold agent (Matt Damon). Director Robert De Niro raises more intriguing episodes than he can pay off (it ought to be a five-hour miniseries), but the movie’s calm tone and burnished look are a pleasure. (R, for violence, language.)
“The History Boys” HHH A faithful take on Alan Bennett’s award-winning play about schoolboys cramming for Oxford in the early 1980s. If the film hasn’t progressed much beyond its stage origins, it still provides some heady ideas and smart-mouth dialogue, and Richard Griffiths is splendid as a fussy, dramatic teacher. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“The Holiday” HHH A house swap leads two lovelorn women to exchange homes for the holidays: Kate Winslet goes to L.A., and Cameron Diaz to small-town England. Writer-director Nancy Meyers continues the feel-good vibe of “Something’s Gotta Give,” although the cast is a mixed bag this time, and the material is surface-deep. (PG-13, for language.)
“Little Children” HHH An observant and thoughtful film on lust and angst in the suburbs, as two married people (Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson) embark on an affair, and a convicted child molester (Jackie Earle Haley) returns to the neighborhood. Director Todd Field gives the film a pleasant, literary quality, and the acting, especially by Winslet, is superb. (R, for nudity, language, violence.)
“The Nativity Story” HHH A refreshingly plain look at the gospel story of Mary, Joseph, and the birth of Jesus, told without spectacle by director Catherine Hardwicke. She emphasizes the trust between Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) and the humility of their surroundings. (PG, for violence.)
“Night at the Museum” HH Ben Stiller takes a job as the night watchman at New York’s Museum of Natural History, only to discover that the dinosaur bones and dioramas come to life after dark. This one’s geared for kids, with broad slapstick and heavy special effects. (PG, for subject matter.)
“The Pursuit of Happyness” HH A salesman (Will Smith) goes into homelessness for the sake of a chancy internship as a stock broker. This movie is one awful thing after another, with Smith in decent form amidst the somewhat superficial treatment. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Rocky Balboa” HH After a long layoff, Sylvester Stallone brings back his franchise character, as restaurateur Rocky decides to fight again. After a depressed opening act, the usual raw eggs and training kick in, although it’s tough to see Stallone looking like a was figure. (PG, for language, violence.)
“Shut Up and Sing” HHH An unexpectedly absorbing documentary about what happened to the Dixie Chicks, the biggest-selling female group in music history, after they off-handedly dissed President Bush at a concert in 2003. The film is less about country music than people reacting to huge changes in their lives. (R, for language.)
“Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny” HH The heavy-metal duo Tenacious D (the delirious creation of comics Jack Black and Kyle Gass) comes to the big screen in the story of their rise to fame-and their duel with Satan for control of a magic guitar pick. It’s a scrappy movie, but Black has some hilarious moments. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“The U.S. vs. John Lennon” HHHH A wonderful documentary that captures the era of dissent in the early 1970s and John Lennon’s voice in it-as well as the Nixon administration’s bogus effort to get Lennon deported. A wealth of archival material and expert testimony make this a fascinating portrait of a time. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Volver” HHH One of Pedro Almodovar’s best movies, a story of a mother (Penelope Cruz, re-discovered as a womanly actress) tending her teenage daughter and the sudden reappearance of her dead mother. It’s an amusing film, but also warm and melancholy. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“We Are Marshall” HH The aftermath of the tragic 1970 plane crash that took the lives of most of the Marshall University football team and its coaches, told with the unavoidable sports-movie cliches but also some nice understatement. The offbeat performances by Matthew McConaughey and David Strathairn help. (PG, for language, subject matter.)
