OneRepublic is at a peak.
The group, known for its pleasant pop and soaring ballads, appeared on the scene in 2007 with a record-breaking No. 1 song, “Apologize.”
But then they went a little quiet. The hits that followed — “Good Life,” “Secrets” — failed to light up the radio dial in the same way.
That changed late last year with the song “Counting Stars,” an infectious and up-beat song that became one of the group’s biggest hits to date.
Riding high on that success, the band will headline Comcast Arena in Everett for a sold-out show at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, as it continues its summer-long arena tour, one of the biggest of its career.
That tour originally started small: 16 dates spread out over May and June, including the Everett stop and an opening date at Red Rocks Amphitheater, the famed venue near the band’s hometown of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Brisk ticket sales led the group to triple its number of shows, though. The five-piece band now plans to stay on the road through the end of August.
OneRepublic toured last summer as well, playing the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery’s amphitheatre in Woodinville. When plugging the band’s new summer dates, singer Ryan Tedder joked to Billboard magazine about one incentive to see the group again so soon.
“The thing is, in the last 12 months all of us have gotten monumentally more handsome,” he said, “so the five of us are a lot better looking than we were last summer.”
In all seriousness, the group also has touted plans to road-test new songs for its planned fourth album, the follow-up to 2013’s “Native.” Expectations will be high for that material, given its recent run of success.
The band had never quite matched the popularity of its Timbaland-produced debut single, “Apologize,” which has sold more than 5 million copies. Hits like “Good Life” made a mark but were not equal to that initial juggernaut.
Admittedly, frontman Tedder was spread a little thin. An in-demand songwriter who penned the No. 1 hit “Bleeding Love” for Leona Lewis, he kept busy between OneRepublic albums. He wrote music for Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson. His work with Adele on the track “Rumour Has It” earned him a Grammy for Album of the Year in 2011.
He refocused on his own band after that win, eventually leading to the single “Counting Stars.” That song has since sold more than 4 million copies, topped the pop charts and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100, one of the music industry’s best bellwethers for a song’s popularity.
OneRepublic won’t arrive in Everett alone. The Script, an Irish alt-pop band, will open the show. Known for its soulful and soaring rock, the trio is touring behind its latest album, “#3,” which produced the hit song “Hall of Fame.” Past hits include “For the First Time” and “Breakeven.”
