Pike Place Market scavenger hunt leads shoppers around construction work

I went to Pike Place Market in Seattle recently, determined to have a cup of soup at Three Girls Bakery.

Much to my dismay, the Sanitary Market was fenced off. Pike Place and the adjacent market buildings are undergoing a major renovation this winter and spring.

More renovations are planned for the fall, but will only affect small parts of the market.

All the buildings were in desperate need of updating. Thankfully, they’re even putting in new (and better) bathrooms.

Three Girls Bakery, like many market businesses, has set up a temporary location during the construction, and I still got my bowl of hearty mushroom barley soup.

Whether you want to find your way around the construction or just want a good excuse to explore the labyrinth that is Pike Place Market, you can check out a free scavenger hunt, “Around the Market in 80 Minutes.”

It’s an adventure game and timed event that takes place on Feb. 27, March 27, April 17, May 29 and June 26. (The final Sunday will feature a grand champion round.)

Check in at the tent under the market clock between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the days of the game for information and rules.

For more information, go to www.pikeplacemarket.org and click on the “Around the Market” event.
