WHAT: Asplenium trichomanes, a fern commonly known as maidenhair spleenwort, is found in mountain and rocky habitats. Its fronds are long and narrow with raised tips, and it is a very delicate-looking plant considering its alpine hardiness. It is even known to grow in the mortar between bricks and is evergreen.
SUN OR SHADE: This fern prefers full- to part shade.
SIZE: Maidenhair spleenwort grows 6- to 12-inches high and is a wonderful front-of-the-border plant in shady rock gardens.
