WHAT: Taipei Silk toad lily, a type of tricyrtis, features showy, orchidlike flowers in the fall.
WHY PLANT IT: Long after other plants have come and gone, it takes center stage, usually starting in September and continuing into October.
WHERE: It grows best in moist but well-drained, rich soil in deep to partial shade. In colder areas, planting it in a brighter spot will encourage slightly earlier blooming, thus avoiding frost. Do not plant it in full sun or the leaves may burn.
HOW: It works well in shady borders or by itself in a more natural setting where it can be seen up close. It will form a rhizome root clump over time. It should not be allowed to dry out completely and would benefit from a layer of mulch when the plant is dormant.
ACTUAL SIZE: This deciduous perennial grows to about 24 inches high and wide and features ovate, glossy green leaves up to 3 inches long. Its inch-long flowers are white with violet-lavender edging.
