WHAT: The fringe tree, also known as chionanthus virginicus, is quite a sight in spring, swaying in the breeze with 6-inch-long lacelike sprays of delicate, dangling white flowers.
It is native to the southeastern part of the United States but performs well in Western Washington and in England, where it is considered among the finest of trees. It was introduced there in the 1700s by an American naturalist from Philadelphia.
SUN OR SHADE: This tree will tolerate dappled shade, but for best bloom production, plant it in full sun.
SIZE: It grows to about 15 feet tall, so it is an excellent choice for the urban garden. Because it is slow growing, it’s wise to purchase one that has already achieved some height.
SEE IT: You’ll find this plant in the urban tree walk that borders the western edge of the parking lot at the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett. See www.evergreenarboretum.com for more information.
