“Old Time Radio — Live On Stage!”: Take a step back in time on Saturday on Whidbey Island to enjoy ageless comedy, drama and mystery in this recreation of the golden age of radio with live actors reading original 1940s scripts on stage.
These classic scripts are from “Fibber McGee &Molly,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “The Whistler” and “Our Miss Brooks.” The readings are brought to life with actors in period costumes performing “sound effects” as they did for radio, according to press material about the show.
During the heyday of radio during the Depression and World War II, actors relied on their voices to create memorable characters. The audience will meet some of those characters from these four radio plays:
“Cleaning the Hall Closet” from “Fibber McGee &Molly” has a husband and wife exchange banter as they open an overstuffed and disorganized closet.
In “The Adventure of the Tolling Bell” from “Sherlock Holmes,” the detective and Dr. Watson confront a serial killer in the English countryside.
“A Plaque for Mr. Conklin,” a play from “Our Miss Brooks,” is the tale of the high school English teacher caught up in a misadventure when principal Conklin thinks he’s about to receive an honor from the school board.
“Beyond Reasonable Doubt” from “The Whistler” spins the story of a former shop girl who murders a blackmailer and tries to pin it on someone else.
“Old Time Radio — Live On Stage!” will be presented by KWPA (96.9 FM) Whidbey Public Radio at 7 p.m. Saturday at South Whidbey High School, 5675 S. Maxwelton Road, Langley.
Tickets are $19 in advance, $23 at the door.
