Just a hunch, but we’re betting you didn’t know it was National Pear Month.
The people at USAPears.org know it, and they are encouraging the country to become acquainted with the Bartletts, Anjous, Boscs, Concordes, Comices, Forelles, Seckels and Starkrimsons. It’s quite a passel of pears, and all grown in the Northwest.
You can visit the Web site (www.usapears.org), see the family portraits (no, really) and learn all about pears, including recipes. Here’s one:
Pear Sunset
1/2 cup cored, pared and coarsely chopped fresh pear
1/2 cup water
2/3 ounce passion fruit juice from concentrate
1/4 ounce pomegranate juice
In blender, combine all the ingredients and puree until smooth. Pour into chilled glass and serve.
