Russ Riddle, lecture in the Loft: Join Russ Riddle as he talks on the subject of “The Fine Art of Studio Furniture Creation.”

The free lecture begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Gallery in the Loft at Brindles Marketplace, 848 N. Sunrise Blvd. (Terry’s Corner), Camano Island.

A wood artist, Riddle is a scientist by training who is largely self-taught as an artist, with a little help and inspiration from woodworkers in his family.

“I believe that craftsmanship isn’t just the package for showing off figure and design but is an integral part of the artistic expression. It is an essential part of the artist’s gift,” Riddle said.

Riddle derives his designs from patterns observed in architecture, nature and furniture from many cultures. He employs inlay, stringing and tiling as graphic design elements to enhance his pieces.

Along with viewing great art on display, participants are encouraged to bring questions. Reservations are recommended as seating is limited. Call 360-631-0688 or e-mail doris@galleryintheloft.com.

Rock on: Remember those rocks with the funny faces painted on them that showed up a lot at arts and crafts sales?

OK. These are not those rocks.

Artist Kathleen Dawe has a different approach to this kind of painting. She uses an “individual” shape and the texture of each rock to complement the subject. Many of the paintings are skulls of birds and animals, a few are of the real animal, while other pieces contain mystical figures.

Dawe’s work is on display from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through Sept. 29 at the Solovei Art Gallery, 2804 Grand Ave., Everett.

Raven Rocks comes to the Bayview: Artists Mary Jo Oxrieder and Windwalker Taibi of Raven Rocks Studio on south Whidbey Island are opening a gallery at Bayview Corner’s historic Cash Store.

Featuring whimsical, contemporary, metaphysical and American Indian works, the gallery will offer patrons a wide variety of affordable original artwork.

Oxrieder and Taibi will also make their artwork during gallery hours, which will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays by chance or appointment, through Dec. 31.
