Robert Goulet is nicely eulogized in the New York Times, in a more expansive piece than the one that ran in today’s Herald, following his death while awaiting a lung transplant.
Goulet may be more memorable to young audiences – that is, the people who might be reading this blog, I’d guess – for his cameos on the Simpsons and appearances in ESPN commercials.
He was even satirized by Will Ferrell on a fairly solid SNL skit. Goulet!
But his albums are worth owning, particularly the Christmas record “This Christmas I Spend With You,” which sadly seems to be out of print on CD.
I imagine Goulet probably didn’t mind Ferrell’s send-up. The singer had great comic timing. Here’s an excerpt from the Times obituary:
When Goulet had surgery on a split femur in the mid-1990s, he asked the surgeon if he would be able to dance afterward. The doctor said yes.
“That’s good,” Mr. Goulet said, “because I couldn’t dance before.”
