Dig this: Put in some elbow grease and pull out a free perennial to take home at the Bellevue Botanical Garden’s “Dig for Treasure” event Aug. 9. Show up between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to help dig, lift and pot the perennials for a renovation of the Northwest Perennial Alliance border garden. The Bellevue Botanical Garden is at 12001 Main St., Bellevue. For more information, visit www.n-p-a.org.

Colorful language: Ask any 4-year- old what color he likes best and he will tell you. Though there are individual color preferences, there are also strong associations with each of the basic colors, says Rosemary Sadez Friedmann, an interior designer and author of “Mystery of Color.”

RED is an exciting, dramatic and rich color. It stimulates the appetite. A burgundy front door is dramatic and inviting.

ORANGE gives off a cheerful aura. It is bold and exciting, yet informal. Rust colors in a room create a casual feeling.

YELLOW is happy and makes a nice, cheerful backdrop in a room. Gold tones create an atmosphere of richness.

BLUE has universal appeal. There’s a feeling of serenity and openness with blue. Blue works well in bedrooms and comes across crisp and clean if trimmed with white.

GREEN is nature’s favorite color. Green is very soothing and easy on the eyes. It works well in a dining room.

VIOLET reminds us of royalty and wealth. Purple and violet are luxurious colors. Too much purple can be overwhelming, but accents of this color do much to punch up a room.

BROWN is a color of nature, relaxing and easy to live with. Red-browns are more formal and work well in great rooms.

WHITE symbolizes freshness, purity and cleanliness. It’s a favorite color for walls. Off-white and tinted-white walls afford a great canvas for other colors.

BLACK is authoritative, sopisticated and is a neutral counterpoint to other colors. It makes a dramatic statement.

GRAY is elegant. Since it is a neutral, it blends well. Gray and blue give a clean, no-fuss look. Gray trimmed with white is classy for both interior and exterior paint.
