Arlington jazz choir places at festival

Arlington High School’s vocal jazz choir group, Jazzmine, recently traveled to Southern California to compete in the 37th annual Fullerton College Jazz Festival.

Members of Jazzmine placed second in the advanced vocal jazz division. Jazzmine singers also received awards for outstanding female vocalist, Erica Ewell, and outstanding male vocalist, Justin Goheen.

While in California the group performed at Disney’s California Adventure and at two area high school music exchanges.

Mariner High student chosen for NSHSS

Lucia J. Osei-Shearman, a Mariner High School student, has been selected for membership by the National Society of High School Scholars.

The NSHSS recognizes top scholars who have achieved superior academic excellence.

Membership entitles Lucia to benefits including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions and member-only resources.

Local kids compete in leadership meet

Nine Lake Stevens High School students recently competed in Students Taking Action with Recognition events in the 2009 Family, Career, and Community, Leaders of America State Leadership Conference in Wenatchee.

The students are Jenae Bertilson, Emma French, Derek Hahn, Crystal Kasalko, Evalynn Lopez, Caitlin Obee, Diana Rossi, Gracie Sheheen and Kayla Schmekel,

The theme for this year’s conference was “Excellence Electrified — Shock the World with the Leader in You.”

Six of the students — Jenae, Emma, Derek, Evalynn, Caitlin and Diana — will represent Washington state and compete in STAR events at the 2009 National FCCLA Leadership Conference in July in Nashville.

Caitlin was elected 2009-2010 state director of STAR events.

Kindergartners help women’s shelter

Students in Marci Milfs’ kindergarten class at Cedar Park Christian School in Everett recently created gift packages for homeless children at Everett Gospel Mission Women’s Shelter.

Students made an Easter mural for the shelter that hangs in the children’s playroom.

Students also created gift packages for the children and mothers at the shelter. The children’s gifts included Easter candy and toys. For the mothers, packages included toiletries, socks, cosmetics and many other basic needs.

Mukilteo student on Carroll dean’s list

Emma Wegermann of Mukilteo was one of 411 students at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., named to the fall semester dean’s list. Wegermann has a 4.0 grade point average.

Eight local students on Columbia dean’s list

The following students from this area were named to the Columbia College dean’s list for the October 2008 to March 2009 award period:

Everett: Barbara L. Bess; Joy M. Eaton

Granite Falls: Lindsey N. Johnson

Lynnwood: Faith M. Jeffery

Marysville: Ralph D. Bartolome; Cuentin C. Coleman; Gregory J. Sheldon

Stanwood: Jack P. Koen; Michael Ojeda

To be named to the dean’s list a student must have completed 12 semester hours and achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale.

Everett student makes Pacific U’s dean’s list

Brandon Scot Keibler of Everett was named to Pacific University’s fall 2008 dean’s list.

The dean’s list in the College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of students who achieve a term GPA of 3.70 or higher with 12 or more graded hours.

Brandon is one of 224 students to achieve this level at the university this semester.

Everett student on Furman dean’s list

Christopher J. Parsons of Everett is on the dean’s list for fall 2008 at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Furman’s dean’s list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher on a 4.0 system.

Cascade grad makes college dean’s list

Adam Aljets, a 2005 graduate of Cascade High School, has made the dean’s list for fall 2008 at Grove City College.

Aljets is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Snohomish student on Citadel dean’s list

Cadet Daniel Joseph Walters of Snohomish was recently honored for outstanding academic achievement at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, during the fall semester of the 2008-2009 academic years.

Walters is seeking a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Walters achieved dean’s list recognition, which is given to those cadets and active duty military students registered for 12 or more semester hours whose grade point ratio is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work.

In addition, Walters earned a Gold Star for achieving a 3.7 grade point average or higher.
