“Celtic Nights” begins the 26th season of the Seattle Choral Company and also happens to be the time when the ancient Celts once observed the Festival of Samhain (“SOW-en”), the beginning of the Celtic New Year.
This is also the time when the harvest comes to an end and when Celts believed the gates to the otherworld were opened and they could communicate with the dead.
The Seattle Choral Company will celebrate all this ancient Celtic lore and tradition during two concerts at 8 p.m. today and Saturday at St. Mark’s Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave. E., Seattle. Non-reserved seating is $25 and $20 for seniors and $10 for under 25. Call 1-800-838-3006 or go to www.seattlechoralcompany.org.
“Celtic Nights” was inspired by the choral sounds of the Irish group Anúna, and its director, Michael McGlynn, who bridges the gap between classical and popular music with a sound that tries to capture and revitalize the ancient music of Celtic Ireland. With this music, the audience will also experience Celtic lore, and hear traditional Irish songs and new songs as well.
Also appearing will be players from the Seattle Uilleann Pipers Club, harpist John Carrington, violin and viola soloist Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi, and the Scoil Rince Slieveloughane Irish Dancers (pronounced: skole rinka SHLEEVE-lock-ane).
