Intiman Theatre, which won a Tony Award in 2006 for outstanding American regional theater, has canceled the remainder of its season because of a funding shortfall.
A message was posted on its website announcing the decision. It read that, on April 16, the theater’s board of trustees voted to cancel the four remaining shows after the final performance of “All My Sons” on April 17. The theater said it had no choice.
“By canceling the current season, we preserve and protect the ability to serve the community in 2012, when the board intends to reopen the theater,” the website message read. “We are still working through details of how this impacts our constituents and will have more information available in the next week.”
Intiman promised that all ticket holders would receive information. The shows that were canceled are “The Call,” “The Playboy of the Western World,” “The Piano Teacher” and “A Boy and His Soul.”
The Seattle Times reported that about 20 employees will be laid off. The theater recently met an emergency fundraising goal of $500,000, but officials said it wasn’t enough to get through the season, according to the Associated Press.
