50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Nick Barhanovich was chairman for an evening at the Everett Elks Lodge for the men aboard his purse seiner, The Emancipator, and the skippers and crews of other seiners, gillnetters, beam trawlers, tollers and everyone else interested in making a living off the produce of the sea.
John Hayes of Oil Heat slid into third base in the first inning of the game with VFW in the National League opener at the 47th and Colby field. VFW’s third-sacker was Lawrence Qualey. Oil Heat won the game on a no-hitter by Bryan Modene.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Communications operator Pam Atkins characterized the Providence Hospital team approach to health care with her compassion for others and a willingness to volunteer. Her duties included handling incoming calls, hospital pages and emergency codes. This was National Hospital Week.
The Wobelo Medallion, Camp Fire’s highest award, was to be presented to eight members of the Pilchuck Area Council this month. Recipients, to be honored at a luncheon at the Colliery Restaurant, were Carol Spurrier, Carol Akerveld, Teresa Jolty, Elizabeth Nielsen, Jennifer Nelson, Lisa Birt, Eva Fox and Wendy Yacket.
