50 years ago (1961)

Dr. Rodney Berg was named new president of Everett Junior College, succeeding Fred Giles. Berg was no stranger to EJC having been a member of the music staff and later dean of instruction. Regarding the selection, college board members and the former president said they were fortunate to have someone so familiar with the institution.

The population of Edmonds, after the Lake Ballinger area was annexed, was unofficially over 10,000, making it the second largest city in the county. It was the first time it had been larger than Mountlake Terrace since that city incorporated in 1954.

25 years ago (1986)

People swarmed to Twin Rivers Park on the South Fork of the Stillaguamish near Arlington. Temperatures in the county were nearing the 90s. Joan James of Dagmar’s Landing on Smith Island said the warm weather was bringing out the boaters. Greg Schmidt, manager of the Lynnwood pool, said it had been a popular spot.

There was an August special on bowling Monday through Sunday at Evergreen Lanes (open 24 hours) at Claremont Way, and Glacier Lanes (with its new restaurant) at 9630 Evergreen Way. A game cost only 89 cents. Fall leagues were now forming too.
