50 years ago (1961)
The Rev. Harold Smallwood, pastor of the Fairmount Open Bible Church, Everett, had just returned from the Holy Land where he attended the World Pentecostal Conference in Jerusalem. Delegates from 43 countries attended.
Everything was coming up roses for Mr. and Mrs. Harley Akles of Marysville. That’s the way they planned it, planting more than 20 varieties in their yard at 1401 Third Street. The Akles had been growing roses for about 10 years, following their retirement from ranching.
25 years ago (1986)
Tom Mayer, presently head of the public services department of Sno-Isle Regional Library, would become the system’s new director on Sept. 1. He would succeed Mae Schoenrock, who was retiring after 19 years as director of the two-county library system with headquarters in Marysville.
Don Bayes, vocational agriculture and natural resources teacher at Stanwood High School the past 19 years, was receiving the Environmental Conservational Award by the Washington Association of Conservation Districts. As state winner he would be in the running for more awards, according to John Andrews, manager of Snohomish Conservation District.
