50 years ago (1961)
Among the stories on the front page were those about levy restoration in the Cavelero’s area, a port plan for Pier One, and the fact there was still hope for the seriously ill actress Elizabeth Taylor.
The Boys Club gym at 13th and Rockefeller was being taken apart to make way for an addition to the physical education plant of the Junior College. The Club was transferring activities to Baker Hieghts, with offices in the old nursery and classes in the Hawthorne School gym.
25 years ago (1986)
Kathleen Block donned a hand-woven blouse and matching skirt while James Arrabito modeled a handsome vest. It was all part of the Wearable Art Fashion Show at the home of Helen Jackson. The show was created by Renee Greenleaf of the Visual Art Center in Everett and Kelly Matlock of Chez La Zoom in La Conner.
Demonstrators gathered around a large satellite antenna dish downtown to bring attention to the opening of congressional hearings on the future of the devices. Demonstrators opposed plans by major networks and cable companies to scramble signals and then charge satellite dish owners a fee to unscramble them.
