50 years ago (1962)
Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Robertson showed the bear he shot with a police pistol near Lake Serene. The bear, which had killed a goat, was trailed to woods near the home of Eleanor Hardy, 13732 Beverly Park Rd., Edmonds. Robertson’s first shot dropped the bear and two more finished it off.
Sunnycrest Grange met with Paulwyno Hellums presiding. Fred Olson was voted into membership, subject to invitation. Reports on the booth at Evergreen Fair indicated that the effort, the first in several years, was quite good considering the short preparation time. The group was already planning for their 1963 booth.
25 years ago (1987)
Mariner High School junior Kelle Powell, the Western Conference and Northwest District AAA cross-country champion as a sophomore, virtually picked up where she left off last year in winning last Saturday’s season-opening Shoreline Invitational cross country meet for girls.
Mary Wagner of Monroe was the winner of round-trip air fare for two to Washington, D.C., courtesy of Alaska Airlines. She was chosen by random drawing from all entries made at the Herald sponsor tent at the Evergreen State Fair.
