50 YEARS AGO (1960)
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Salmon Derby would be held this Sunday in Port Gardner Bay, with weighing-in ceremonies at the Old Guard Home on Oakes. First prize was a 14-foot boat and motor. Chairing the event was Bill Granger, senior vice commander. Chowder would be served following the derby.
Members of the 64th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Paine Field battled over 18 holes at Municipal, and when it was over two majors tied for top honors, posting a net of 63. They were Maj. Marion Lloyd and Maj. John Odiorne. With only one trophy, the men flipped a coin and Odiorne won.
25 YEARS AGO (1985)
A front-page story announced that U.S. cameras confirmed that wreckage found 13,000 feet deep in the Atlantic and 560 miles off the coast of Newfoundland was indeed that of the ill-fated Titanic. According to the article, the positive identification was made by a French-made submarine sonar system and American-made underwater cameras.
Work-play was catching on at firms like Hewlett Packard. During the lunch hour, Tracy Sharples was riding his bike toward Arlington, Lynn Nixon was running four miles, and Debbie Schermer was playing on the volleyball courts.
