50 YEARS AGO (1960)
Allen Baird, president of the Pinehurst Commercial Club, and Ed Ellingson of Pinehurst presented checks to county Treasurer Verne Sievers that would get a blacktopping project for Madison Street on the road. Four blocks of the thoroughfare would be paved.
Three businesses and three apartments were destroyed by an early morning fire in the heart of Monroe’s business district. Two Main Street buildings were ravaged by the blaze, but action by the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, with the assistance from the Snohomish department, prevented damage to two adjacent buildings. The fire started in Jack’s Cafe and spread to Eric’s Barber Shop.
25 YEARS AGO (1985)
David Wilson, a hammer thrower from Snohomish, was named to the U.S. Junior Track and Field team that would compete twice against Canada, Japan and Mexico this month. The meets would be staged at Washington State University and in Vancouver, B.C.
The Annual Prevention of Child Abuse Golf Tournament, an Edmonds Exchange Club fundraiser, would take place tomorrow and the next day at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville. There was also a no-host award ceremony.
