50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Clara Chaffee marked her 90th birthday last Friday surrounded by friends at the home of Clare and Louise Dobler. She had made her home in Everett since she and her late husband, Charles, arrived in 1921 from North Dakota.
Mukilteo Boulevard was open to one-way traffic at the Maple Heights Bridge after a Great Northern Railroad water line washed out a portion of the approach. Street Superintendent Parker Gallaspy said there was no danger to the bridge. The mishap was reported by Jack Alexander, 15.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
The historic railroad tunnel under downtown Everett would become a highway for cars and several new bridges would be built over railroad crossings if new negotiations between the city and Burling Northern Railroad succeeded. Mayor Bill Moore favored the plan because new transportation routes to the proposed Navy base were needed.
Employees at Everett’s Western Gear Corp. plant believed the appointment of Charles Hotes to manager was a sign the company intended to stay here. Western Gear’s future had been clouded ever since the Navy decided to make Everett a home port.
