Movie reviews

“Capote” HHHH An elegant account of Truman Capote’s experiences researching and writing the “non-fiction novel” “In Cold Blood.” The movie’s moral dilemma is a bit too neat, but Philip Seymour Hoffman captures the fey writer to a T. (R, for language, violence.)

“The Constant Gardener” HHH Engrossing adaptation of John le Carre’s novel about a British diplomat (Ralph Fiennes) learning that his wife’s death in Africa was not what it seemed. An effective blend of the political and the personal. With Rachel Weisz. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)

“Elizabethtown” HH Cameron Crowe wrote and directed this comedy about a man (Orlando Bloom) traveling to Kentucky to pick up his father’s body. Some nice observations, but the movie is all over the place and Bloom can’t carry the film. With Kirsten Dunst. (PG-13, for language.)

“Good Night, and Good Luck.” HHH George Clooney directed this black-and-white look at the showdown between newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and Senator Joseph McCarthy in 1953-54. The story is strong even if the approach is just a bit self-satisfied. (PG, for subject matter.)

“In Her Shoes” HH A flick chick par excellence, with Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette as feuding sisters who discover a grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) they didn’t know about. This one hits all the notes, and succeeds at being funny and moving, for the whole thing feels overly engineered. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” HHH A crime movie that manages to spoof itself, this wild ride gives good roles to Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer as guys lost in L.A.’s underworld. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)

“The Legend of Zorro” HH Sequel to the 1998 film with Antonio Banderas as the masked crime-fighter and Catherine Zeta-Jones as his wife. Their heat has been domesticated, the script is dull, and this one is geared for the kiddie audience. (PG, for violence.)

“North Country” HH A fictional story based on a real landmark sexual-harassment case, with Charlize Theron going after the abusive bosses at a Minnesota mine. Some strong, emotion-grabbing scenes, but a lot is too routine. (R, for language, violence.)

“Prime” H A comedy that relies on a somewhat labored premise for most of its comedy. 37-year-old Uma Thurman meets a 23-year-old beau, and tells all to an increasingly uncomfortable therapist (Meryl Streep). (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio” HH True-life story about a 1950s housewife (Julianne Moore) who propped up her 10 kids and alcoholic husband (Woody Harrelson) by answering advertising contests. Some really intriguing material about the marriage, but the movie repeats itself after the halfway point. (PG-13, for subject matter.)

“Shopgirl” HHH A melancholy romance, based on Steve Martin’s novel about a lonely twentysomething (lovely performance by Claire Danes) and her affair with an older man (Martin). Probably too stately, but it sets a mood. (R, for language, nudity.)

“Wallace &Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” HHH The claymation characters from Britain’s Aardman studio return in this pun-filled pleasure about a mutated rabbit attacking vegetable patches. Very droll and understated when it needs to be, which is most of the time. (G)

“The Weather Man” HHH Nicolas Cage plays a Chicago TV weatherman who can’t predict his personal life any better than the climate. An uneven movie, but you end up rooting for Cage’s hapless goof. (R, for language, subject matter.)
