It was May 30, 1911, when the Great Fire ravaged downtown Snohomish, wiping out 35 businesses.
One of the businesses was the Penobscot Hotel, which burned so fast the guests barely escaped out the rear entrance, though many lost all their baggage, wrote Warner Blake on his weblog, “Snohomish: Then and Now.”
The fire was extremely hot, burning one section of a fire hose in two while the firefighters fought the blaze, Blake wrote.
This is the kind of detail to expect from historian David Dilgard, who will be giving a free slide show talk, “Marking 100 Years Since the Great Fire.”
The slide show begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Upper Case Books, 611 Second St., Snohomish.
Dilgard is co-founder of the Northwest Room at the Everett Public Library. His slide shows are popular, so the suggested arrival time is 6 p.m.
