Super Kid: Steven Utt of Marysville-Pilchuck High School

Going long: Steven Utt runs cross country and track for Marysville-Pilchuck High School. He served as captain of the cross-country team for two years.

He began cross country in seventh grade at the advice of a teacher and didn’t have much success. With extra training, he ran his way out of the back of the pack. Steven has also wrestled and swam for the Tomahawks.

Making music Steven is the lead trumpeter in the Marysville-Pilchuck marching and jazz bands and the wind ensemble. He picked the instrument because an older boy he admired played it. “I like that it’s loud. I’m not really an arrogant person. I’m quiet and shy, but I like the arrogance of the trumpet.”

Lifelong musician: Steven hopes to study music at either the University of Washington or Central Washington University next year. His career goal is to play the trumpet professionally. He envisions himself in an orchestra or doing freelance work at big city clubs and other venues.

Sweet serenade: In addition to his 1969 King Silver Flair trumpet, Steven owns a didgeridoo and a ukulele that he taught himself to play. He takes his ukulele to track and cross-country meets and plays with a few teammates between races. “We sing for other teams. We try to serenade the ladies. It doesn’t really work out.”

Starting college: Steven is taking a geography class at Everett Community College through the Running Start program. At Marysville-Pilchuck, he has taken advanced-placement U.S. history and language and composition, as well as college algebra, which he found more challenging than the AP classes.

His favorite class is jazz band, which begins at 6:20 a.m. He’s a morning person and likes taking a class while other students sleep.

Uncle Steven: Steven’s sister graduated from Marysville-Pilchuck in 2002. She lives nearby with her daughters, 6 and 1. Steven is trying to teach his older niece to play the trumpet, but he says she is easily distracted.

Role models: When Steven was a freshman, senior cross-country runners Jesse Maston and David Hinckley befriended him, offering rides to practice and advice.

Great place: Steven’s favorite place is the Totem Middle School band room. He fondly remembers band leader Peter Joseph and a dedicated cadre of budding musicians.
