The Forum: Readers weigh in on questions

As Stanwood reader Mary Hetrick observed in the Jan. 8 Forum, “With the holidays now over, we all probably have many cards to throw or give away. I think there are always folks who are in need of these for one reason or the other. Most of the cards are too gorgeous to just throw out.

“Could we please have an address or telephone number from those who may want these?’’

Thankfully, Kandace Aksnes of Lynnwood, who first and foremost tells us, “My last name is pronounced AX-ness,’’ also says, “I’ve been sending greeting cards to the Mountlake Terrace Bethesda Lutheran Church for several years.

“For used greeting cards, send only the front cover — as long as there isn’t any personal writing on the back side — to Bethesda Lutheran Church, 23406 56th W., Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043. Or to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, P.O. Box 60100, Boulder City, NV 89006-0100.’’

For unused greeting cards, Kandace says to send the cards, with or without the envelopes, to either Bethesda Lutheran or St. Jude’s Ranch for Children.

Then, backtracking again to the Jan. 8 Forum, Oak Harbor reader Doris Zvolensky asked if someone could suggest a German restaurant where she could celebrate her 80th birthday.

Two readers suggested their favorite German eat places, and now Colleen Kohler of Everett chimes in, writing, “I don’t know if the Budapest Bistro is within the 50-mile radius from Oak Harbor, but the food is amazing. I have eaten in Germany!!’’

Colleen also has copied off the Budapest Bistro’s menu, noting the address (12926 Mukilteo Speedway in Lynnwood — in the Albertson’s Shopping Center at Beverly Park Road and the speedway), the eat-in or take-out option, plus the telephone number: 425-513-9846.

Then, too, Colleen has jotted down the weekdays certain dishes are available — stuffed cabbage rolls on Tuesdays and Saturdays, wiener schnitzel on Thursdays, stroganoff on Thursdays, beef goulash on Fridays.

By the way, from the menu Colleen sent along, I notice there are also soups and desserts listed, plus mention of deli items/specialty items as well. (Just in case a beginning and end are the be-all and end-all, as far as your own appetite is concerned or the fixings for a do-it-yourself German feast at home captures your fancy.)

So, that pretty much does it for the Forum today, but never forget that the Forum is always happy to receive your contributions (the subject of German food is making a whole lot of us drool — how about it, you German-heritage cooks — can we wheedle you into sharing one of or some of your treasured heritage recipes with the rest of us?) and requests, so don’t hesitate to send them along to Judyrae Kruse at the Forum, c/o The Herald, P.O. Box 930, Everett, WA 98206.

Please remember that all letters and e-mail must include a name, complete address and telephone number with area code. No exceptions and sorry, but no response to e-mail by return e-mail.

The next Forum will appear in Monday’s Good Life section.
