There’s plenty to eat at the state fair

The food choices at the Evergreen State Fair go beyond corn on the cob, soft drinks and corn dogs, so that you can stay as long as you like and not worry about what to eat or go home early because you’re hungry.

Yes, there’s the traditional corn on the cob from the Lions Club’s Sight and Hearing Foundation in Everett or the Nile Shrine Oriental Band in Kirkland. At the same time, most booths will serve soft drinks and a few more will offer corn dogs. But, there’s also a variety of ethnic foods to enjoy. Here are some of your yummy choices.

The Snoqualmie Tribe in Carnation will grill salmon and pair it with fry bread, corn on the cob, baked beans and coleslaw for a tempting dinner.

Zieglers Bratwurst House from Lynnwood will serve German bratwurst, jumbo Polish sausage and vegetarian Russian stew. Also, Bavarian Bakery Deli Restaurant from Camano Island will have Bavarian bratwurst with onions and sauerkraut, jumbo bratwurst, Hungarian goulash and beef stroganoff served over spatzel.

Kolossus Gyrons in Everett plans to tempt us with gyros or feta cheese pita sandwiches, panakopita, souvlaki and, of course, baklava. They’re all great dishes and if you haven’t adventured into Greek food, celebrate the Olympics with a sampling.

Kaleenka Piroshy, which consistently wins at the Taste of Edmonds, will serve piroshky, a baked delight that includes a roasted beef-cheddar, salmon and cream cheese or vegetarian filling. They’re also making a dish they call the Red Cossack – red potatoes boiled with lemon, dill, parsley and farmer’s sausage.

Wander around and you’ll find Mexican cuisine including tacos, burritos, tostadas grande or taco salads, chicken fajitas, tacos and nachos supreme from two different concessionaires. There’s also egg rolls, authentic Beijing-style potstickers, udon noddles with veggies and marinated chicken.

Sandwich choices include a Walla Walla burger, hot dogs or chili dogs. International Wrap City Cafe from Marysville will serve Philly steak sandwiches plus Italian, teriyaki, Southwestern and veggie wraps. At the Monroe Sub Shop booth you’ll find submarine sandwiches plus Ivar’s clam chowder. The Nile Temple Drum &Bugle Corps from Lynnwood will serve barbecued sandwiches, as will Aronica Concessions from Lake Stevens.

When you get thirsty, consider a frozen mocha, bubble tea or an Italian soda, which are sprinkled across the many food booths.

For dessert, the Snohomish County Dairy Women will serve purple cow and other shakes, ice cream cones, floats and frozen yogurt. Or consider visiting the Lopez Island Creamery booth for handmade ice cream or the delightful S’mores-A-Bob, which are fruit skewers dipped in chocolate from Berry Ka Bob in Greenacres. You’ll also find frozen bananas, dippin’ dots and waffle cones. Enjoy an Italian ice from Thompco Italina Ices in Federal Way.

Oh, and don’t forget to sample the elephant ears, which are made with whole-wheat dough that’s shaped like an elephant ear and deep fried, then topped with cinnamon and sugar, or the funnel cake, which is deep-fried swirls of dough traditionally topped with powered sugar.

Wait. We didn’t get any fresh-roasted cashews or grab a scone from Fisher Fair Scones in Medina. What? Exhibits? Rides? There’s something besides food?
