Toast the arrival of autumn at Sausage Festival

It features sausage, Bavarian food and a beer garden with a long lineup of acts.

It has a multitude of ways for families to enjoy some early fall fun, including a carnival, a rock-climbing wall and Family Stage performances.

It began as an effort to save a Catholic school from closing decades ago and has become one of Everett’s most popular festivals, organizers say.

It is the Everett Sausage Festival, now in its 31st year, and it returns to the Immaculate Conception-Our Lady of Perpetual Help church grounds today through Sunday.

The festival, known for its beer garden, ethnic food, craft booths and more also features carnival rides, a farmers market and children’s games, including balloon popping, free-throw shooting and football tossing.

Among other acts, the weekend’s family stage entertainment includes One World Taiko, a group of Japanese drummers, performing from 4 to 5 p.m. today; Reptile Isle, an interactive show with a large assortment of crawling creatures, from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday; an Everett Dance Theater performance from 3:30 to 4:30 Saturday; and a Navy Band Northwest concert from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Another family stage event will be the festival raffle, with the prize drawing at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. This year’s grand prize is a seven-day, six-night Caribbean cruise. Raffle proceeds are used to support the school.

Organizers also said visitors should be aware of a few changes to this year’s festival. This year a tent will be set up outside for the all-day bingo games, which in the past were housed in the school’s basement. This allows for easier access for those with handicaps. Also, a free shuttle will run between the school and Everett Station to eliminate parking hassles.

And finally, of course, the beer garden. It will be open until midnight tonight and Saturday, and until 6 p.m. Sunday. Its music will range from blues and rock ‘n’ roll to Top 40 hits and more. Groups include The Penguins, the New Blues Brothers and Panda Conspiracy. In addition, the beer garden will televise various sports events from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
