Free: State parks do not require a Discover Pass on May 10. They will also be free on June 6 and June 13.

Bird: Pilchuck Audubon Society’s Birdathon is May 15 to 18. Participants solicit pledges for how many bird species they are able to spot. There are team and individual categories, and category for photographers. Get more info at www.pilchuckaudubon.org.

Photography: Jennifer Wu will talk about photographing the night sky at 7 p.m. May 19 at the Mountaineers Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle. Wu specializes in nighttime photography. She is the co-author of “Photography: Night Sky: A Field Guide for Shooting After Dark.” Tickets are $14 for Mountaineers members, $16 for non-members. www.mountaineers.org.

Edible plants: An edible plant walk is 3 to 5 p.m. on May 23 at the Mukilteo Library. Jennifer Sundstrom will lead a walk to discuss food and medicinal uses, with a focus on wild edible plants. Tips for sustainable harvesting will be offered. Rain or shine, so dress appropriately.

Rafting: Adventure Cascades, a white-water rafting company in Darrington, will offer short whitewater run on the Sauk River on May 30. This 3-mile section is an introduction to what the Sauk has to offer with great rapids and beautiful views of Whitehorse Mountain. The trip lasts approximately 2 hours. Trips meet at the shop, 1055 Seeman St., Darrington, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All equipment is provided. Just bring a bathing suit; $45.

Get outside: Girls from 6-18 can spend a day learning outdoors skills on May 30 in Seattle. Girls will learn navigation, first aid, the 10 essentials, leave no trace skills and rock climbing. Beach: Edmonds Parks and Recreation is looking for people who would like to spend a few hours volunteering as beach docents this summer at Olympic Beach visitor station. The station is open noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and noon to 3 p.m. on weekdays. Application deadline is June 16 and training begins June 23. Sail: The Schooner Zodiac, based in Bellingham, offers an evening sail with a 4-course dinner paired with beers from Boundary Bay Brewery. The sail is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on June 13. The coast is $85 per person. Make reservations by calling 206-719-7622. Get more info at schoonerzodiac.com.
