Backyard: Learn how to create a backyard habitat for wildlife at 7 p.m. March 16, at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N East Camano Dr. Monica Van der Vieren, native plant steward, will talk about creating a visually pleasing yard with native plants that will invite in birds, butterflies and other wildlife, whether you have a small yard or a large property. Hummingbirds: See “First Flight: A mother Hummingbird’s Story” at 7 p.m. March 17 at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park, 128th Street SE, Everett. Watch the film and then see a real hummingbird nest and learn more about hummingbirds in our area. $3, reserve a spot by calling 425-316-8592.

Marine: Learn about diving into the chilly waters of Puget Sound at 1:30 p.m. March 19 at the Mountlake Terrace Library. This event for kids 5 to 15 will talk about the gear needed and show a slide presentation. Sea shells, shark teeth, photos and more will be available for kids to examine. Bikes: Sharing Wheels is offering bicycle mechanic classes to help anyone learn how to maintain and repair their bikes. Two classes are offered. Basic bike mechanics is at 6 p.m. on March 20, May 11 or June 15. Classes are 3 1/2 hours and cover basic bike care, including flat tire replacement, brakes and derailers; $35. Advanced bike mechanics is 6 to 9 p.m. April 6, 13, 20 or 27 or July 6, 13, 20 or 27. The class will teach more detailed bike care including cable sytems and bearings; $100. Climbing: Blake Herrington will talk about his new climbing guidebook, focusing on routes in Washington and southern British Columbia at 7 p.m. March 22 at The Mountaineers program center, 7700 Sandpoint Way NE, Seattle. Get details at www.mountaineers.org.

Bear dogs: Meet Colter and Savute, Karelian bear dogs who help resolve bear-people conflicts, at 1 p.m. March 26. The dogs and their handlers, state Fish and Wildlife officers Chris Moszeter and Nick Jorg, will be at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park, 128th Street SE, Everett. They will talk about bears and bear safety. At the end of the presentation, they’ll give a demonstration of the dogs’ skills at scaring off bears using a person in a bear skin. $7, $5 for Adopt A Stream members. Boating: A 7-week boating course, offered by the Everett Sail and Power Squadron, begins April 11 at the Port of Everett, Everett Yacht Club Building, 404 14th Street. The course covers fundamentals of safe boating. Upon successful completion of the final test, students qualify for the Washington State Boater Education card required before operating watercraft in Washington. $50 non-members/$35 members.
