Vintage extravaganza

In this modern age, it’s hard to find opportunities to wear fancy or flamboyant hats — unless you’re a member of the Red Hat Society or happen to be a

runway model.

Friday night, however, that is going to change for at least a few hours, thanks to the Ruffles & Rust Hat Spectacular at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe.

Prizes

will be awarded for best hat and best hat and outfit ensemble at the kickoff for the two-day Ruffles & Rust market, featuring antiques, vintage-inspired home decorations, handmade goods and one-of-a-kind art, plus the chance for junkaholics to socialize.

This is the second event of its kind by Come Junk With Us, the Snohomish-based vintage market business of Timi Weathers, who also charters bus trips to upscale flea markets throughout the Northwest.

Back in October, Weathers invited about 50 vendors to the fairgrounds for her first Ruffles & Rust market. More than 2,500 people attended.

It was such a success, she’s doing it again, four months later, this time with 85 vendors, plus a variety of Saturday classes by craft experts, who will teach attendees how to make jewelry, ribbon roses and soap.

So great is the demand for vintage-inspired home decor, Weathers is opening a new 3,000-square-foot store in March at the corner of Avenue D and First Street in downtown Snohomish in the former Black Cat Antiques space.

Weathers’ venture will be a joint one with Annie McDowell, the owner of Annie’s on First, one of the most well-known antiques shops in Snohomish and recently named the best antiques shop in Western Washington by KING 5 TV.

“We’re excited for this new little shop to open up,” said McDowell, who will continue to operate her store in addition to the new operation, which will be called Ruffles & Rust Square.

“We are putting a new spin on an old concept, an ‘antique mall’ of sorts, not your granny’s antique mall. You won’t find partitioned-off sections, heavy Americana furniture or rows and rows of collectibles,” Weathers said.

“We will have 3,000 square feet of the hottest trends of vintage-inspired home decorating and garden.”

Ruffles & Rust Square will feature about a dozen vendors, plus parking lot sales, book signings, crafting classes and trunk shows by some of the most popular Etsy.com sellers in the Northwest, Weathers said.

First, however, it’s time for the Ruffles & Rust market at the fairgrounds.
