King and Skagit county farmers open their fields to the public for self-guided farm tours this weekend.
The seventh annual King County Harvest Celebration Farm Tour and the seventh annual Festival of Family Farms invite visitors to tour farms and learn about local agriculture.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 26 working farms in King County offer visitors a chance to walk their fields, buy fresh produce and pumpkins and chat with farmers.
Children can meet farm animals, run through corn mazes and participate in farm-related activities. Families can take hayrides or tour historic barns at 10 additional agricultural sites. More than 5,500 people participated last year.
In Skagit County, participants can visit 15 farms from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Each farm features self-guided tours, children’s activities and farm stands. Some feature food, educational exhibits and u-pick fields. Visitors can chat with farmers at most locations.
Some farms feature oyster shucking demonstrations, alpaca petting and walking, and wine tastings.
The tours are sponsored by Washington State University’s King County Extension office and Skagit County Extension office.
Downloadable farm maps are available for both tours at their Web sites.
Many farms in Snohomish county are also open this weekend and allow visitors to participate in fall activities, including corn mazes, pumpkin patches and harvest celebrations.
