Visual arts openings: Arlington art show puts focus on handmade work

Arlington’s Artist Trading Cards presents its first Heart to Hand Festival, a celebration of all things handmade, including quilts, paper, bead work and fiber arts.

The festival also will feature how-to demonstrations in quilting, fiber arts, hats, diva pins, cards, fused glass, handmade soaps and the Mexican folk art of papel picado, making decorations out of tissue paper. There also will be opportunities to trade Artist Trading Cards at the festival.

The festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 340 N. Olympic Ave., Arlington.

Preserving Chinese tradition: The art of Chinese ink and color is ancient and originated as home decoration. This detailed painting style has been well preserved and purified for thousands of years.

HonDuan Yang of Seattle is part of the reason this traditional art persists, as he continues to draw and teach and talk about this fascinating and beautiful art form.

Yang is exhibiting his work through September at the Solovei Art Gallery, 2804 Grand Ave., Everett.

“I see the exhibit by professor Yang as a wonderful cultural travel into the world of authentic art of China, the history of which counts centuries of carrying tradition of the style and spirituality,” gallery owner Lyussy Hyder said.

Yang’s signature subjects include the eagle, little swallows, peonies and orchids, the winter plum tree, upright bamboo trees, dreamy wisterias and cute yellow chickens frolicking in a back yard.

“A Gathering of Visions”: Six artists gather to share their visions in a multimedia show of form, color and fun. Curated by Raven Rocks Studio, the show and sale will include pyrograph gourds, original watercolor and acrylic paintings, American Indian drums and jewelry, collage, tapestry, prints and art cards.

The invitational art show runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at The Front Room of the Bayview Cash Store, 5603 Bayview Road, Whidbey Island. An artists reception is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Visitors will see artwork expressed in a variety of genres, including abstract, impressionist and illustration. Artists include Laurel Eagle Moon, Aaron Greenbird, Mary Jo Oxrieder, Windwalker Taibi, Holly Thomas and Maia Waye. All will be present to answer questions and some will do demonstrations of their work.
