Weekend best bets: Bluegrass, gardens, festival, beer …

Bluegrass: The Darrington Bluegrass Festival runs from Friday to Sunday in, you guessed it, Darrington. There will be lots of music, both formal performances and informal jams. People bring their instruments to join the all-afternoon and all-evening jam sessions that crop up in various corners of the campgrounds. Get the details in our story.

Heart by Heart: Hear the sound of Heart on Friday at Tulalip. The band Heart by Heart is more like a spin-off than a tribute. In fact, absent sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, guitarist Roger Fisher (of Monroe) and a few others, Heart By Heart is much like the band. Details in our story.

Community fun: Kla Ha Ya Days runs through Sunday in Snohomish. You’ll find carnival rides, a street fair, frog jumping, pie-eating contests, a car show, airplane rides and more; free. Read more in our story.

Arrr: Pirates will storm Jetty Island at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. There will be demonstrations of pirate skills and folklore, followed by a treasure hunt in the sand.

Music The Snohomish County-based Gothard Sisters are celebrating the release of their new Celtic folk CD. The release party and concert is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater, 1211 Fourth St., Snohomish. Because that show is nearly sold out, another concert, at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Thumb, has been added. Read more in our story.

Art in the sand: A sand sculpting contest is 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Marina Beach, 650 Admiral Way S., Edmonds. You can form a team or build a masterpiece on your own. It’s open to all ages. Sign-up begins at 10 a.m. Bring buckets and shovels.

Lawns into lettuce: The Snohomish Conservation District recently launched its new “Lawns to Lettuce” program and is inviting people to a free workshop from 10 a.m. to noon July 18 at the Open Gate Farm on Camano Island. Participants will learn easy techniques for creating a garden bed without having to dig up sod and how to naturally control diseases and insect problems without chemicals. Read more about it in our story.

Find inspiration: Check out some beautiful gardens and get some ideas for your own. The Edmonds in Bloom Garden Tour is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It includes six diverse gardens located throughout Edmonds. Some are art-inspired hideaways on small lots, others are quiet sanctuaries in dense neighborhoods and older gardens with sentimental value. Read more in our story.

Art and nature: The Mukilteo Quilt &Garden Tour is Saturday and Sunday at seven gardens. You can see 100 colorful quilts on display in residential gardens in and around Mukilteo. Read more in our story.

Rock out: The Darrington Rock and Gem Show is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Mansford Grange, 1265 Railroad Ave. There will be hand-crafted jewelry and more.

Drink up: The Bothell Brewest is 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Country Village Bothell, 23718 Bothell-Everett Highway. Eight local microbreweries will be pouring. A $20 admission includes a sample glass and six tasting tickets.
