Weekend best bets: Plant sale, train show, beer and music

Green thumb: If you like to garden, do yourself a favor and check out the Snohomish County Conservation District native plant sale on Saturday. You’ll be able to buy native plants, of course. You can also get your soil tested for free, learn about landscaping, buy a rain barrel or participate in activities with your kids. Get all the details in our story here.

Choo cho: A train show and swap meet is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. It’s one of the largest shows in the Northwest. All ages are welcome. There will be more than 20 operating layouts of all scales and vendor tables. Tickets are $6-$8. Get more info here.

Free music Hear David Droz perform the third movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor as part of Mukilteo Community Orchestra’s free “Local Heroes” concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo. The Seattle Pacific University Brass Quintet will perform at 1:30 p.m. as a prelude to the concert. Get more info in our story here.

“Flat Stanley:” The classic book comes to the stage at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The show is targeted for children who may have problems at traditional theater experiences. The show is welcoming to kids with autism, sensory processing disorder or other special needs. Read more here.

Beer and music Everett’s Scuttlebutt Brewery will release its Ming the Merciless Imperial IPA at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Cannery, 2820 Oakes Ave., Everett. The event, which is in collaboration with the Everett Music Initiative, will also have live music from bands Deep Sea Diver and Tangerine. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased here. The event is 21-and-over.

“Evil Twin”: The dark, suspenseful comedy “Evil Twin” premieres this weekend at Everett Community College. The play was written by EvCC teacher Beth Peterson and performed by her students. It shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Room 120 Baker Hall, Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St., Everett. Violent and mature content makes the play unsuitable for children. Admission is by donation. Read more in our story here.

Songwriter: Danny O’Keefe, a renowned songwriter whose songs were recorded by singers including Elvis, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Alison Krauss, Jimmy Buffet and John Denver, performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Thumbnail Theatre, 1211 Fourth St., Snohomish. Admission is $20 at the door. The concert includes an appearance by Joel Tepp. Read more in our story here.

Fishing: The Smelt Derby Festival, a community celebration with fishing, dancing, music, food, raffles, pancake breakfast and more, is Saturday in La Conner. Get more information here. And if you want to know how to cook smelt, we can help you with that, too.

Steampunk: Steam Powered Giraffe, a rocking combination of mime, music and robots is Friday and Saturday at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. Read more about it (it’s a bit hard to explain) and get tickets here.

Storyteller: Hear Native American stories told by Lois Landgrebe of the Tulalip Tribe at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Mukilteo Library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd. She will sing and play her hand drum, tell stories and talk about the history behind them. You’ll get to make a canoe craft to take home. For children and their families.
