Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro,” the spring production of Seattle Opera Young Artists program, will play in six performances opening tonight at the Theater at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.
These fully staged operas star the young singers who come to Seattle Opera each year for training in all aspects of opera performance. Participants in the program, who already have advanced vocal training, come to Seattle from around the country to polish their performance skills, give community recitals and sing in the spring opera.
Over the years, many of these singers have gone on to promising opera careers, including performances in Seattle Opera mainstage productions.
“Figaro” is one of Mozart’s best operas; some say it’s the best opera ever written. It’s a comic look at contemporary society and politics, written in a style known as opera buffa, with a sparkling score and a tangled plot.
The 400-seat Meydenbauer Center theater at 11100 NE Sixth St. in downtown Bellevue provides an intimate setting that gives opera fans a rare up-close view of the production.
Dean Williamson conducts the orchestra and Peter Kazaras directs. The opera is sung in Italian with English captions.
Performances continue weekends through April 10 with evening and matinee shows. Tickets, $15-$30, 206-389-7676, 800-426-1619, www.seattleopera.org.
