Zoo puts spiders front and center

“Masters of the Web,” a new spider exhibit featuring a variety of exotic and local spiders, educational information and interactive experiences, opens Saturday at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.

The zoo’s exhibit consists of three areas: the Web Courtyard; Spider World, an indoor facility featuring 14 species of spiders; and Spiders on Trial, where a mock courtroom will reveal and correct some of the myths about spiders through trials of the accused spider species in “Zooperior” Court.

Connecting the areas will be a larger-than-life orb web patterned after Tetragnatha, a genus of local spider that builds nearly horizontal orb webs.

Photographs of spiders and webs taken by children and professional photographers will also be on display.

An outdoor garden area is available for arachnophobic visitors, or those not quite as brave as their children.

The exhibit is open during regular zoo hours and is free with regular zoo admission. It runs through Oct. 31, when presumably the spiders must rush off to honor Halloween commitments.

Shown are some of the winning entries in the “Masters of the Web” photography contest.
